Doc Martin: Regional Identity

The establishing shot at the beginning of the clip of the Old doctors surgery helps represent regional identify. Firstly it shows us that it is lacking many modern medical practises which implies that its set in the British countryside where it implies that it is behind on technology and medical advancements. It also shows us the stark contrast between Doc Martin and the locals. With Doc Martin placed higher up in the screen and wearing a suit suggests that he is a man of authority and the locals being more laid back and relaxed which could show us the stark contrast between Doc martin who is from the city and the locals who are from the countryside. Through the use of Mise en scene. the room is poorly lit and only has natural lighting coming through. further suggesting that the surgery is outdated.

Also, the use of accent and Sociolect demonstrates the contrast between Doc martin and the locals. with the locals using words such as 'bartman' instead of 'barbin' implicates that where they are is in the west country and on he seaside whereas Doc martin speaks more formally suggesting that he is from the inner city such as London.

Next, Cuts are used to show the frantic nature of what happening , but also its show Doc Martin slowly adjusting to his lifestyle in the countryside and trying to address several people at once, Stereotyping Doc martin as someone who is used to a fast-paced, hard working lifestyle of the city whereas the locals are used to the laid-back lazy lifestyle. This is reinforced by the fact that the cuts are often slow, much like the region where its set.

Throughout the clip, there is a lot of use of Shot-reverse-Shot when Doc Martin is talking to the locals, this could potentially show the contrast between Doc martin and the locals in how they live and how they act in day-to-day life.

Digetic sound is used in the clip, through the use of seagulls and the sea, to  confirm that where Doc Martin is now is in the seaside/countryside.  Even though this is non-synchronous sound that is being used. it makes you able to relate to the region that Doc Martin is now in and how it's different from where he used to work.

Finally, when Doc Martin is walking the stray dog to the police station, it implies that in the countryside, they're a lot of animals out there. which would be annoying for Doc martin to handle as he is used to the city where there would be not many stray dogs or animals around. Once he leaves the dog with the police officer, there is a close up on the policeman's face during and after the Doc leaves. this suggests that the police officer is just like the rest of the people in the village in that he is laid-back. Once again showing just how different the setting is for Doc martin to adjust to and that he is not accustomed to how things work in the Countryside.
